Dr. Von Roenn has actively engaged in palliative care education and research since the beginning of her career (analgesic dosing service, Am J Health-Syst Pharm 56:1119-1125, 1999). A primary focus of her work is, and has been, in promoting the integration of palliative care and symptom management throughout the continuum of the cancer experience. These activities are highlighted by her role as Chair of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Palliative Care Task Force and as a Co-Principal Investigator of the Education for Physicians in End-of-Life Care-Oncology Project (EPEC-O). As Chair of the annual Chicago Supportive Oncology Conference, she strives to blend the palliative care world with that of cancer care.

Ms. De Lima is the Executive Director of the International Association for Palliative Care (IAHPC) since 1999. The Mission of IAHPC is to collaborate and work to improve the quality of life of patients with advanced life-threatening conditions and their families, by advancing hospice and palliative care programs, education, research, and favorable policies around the world. The organization focuses its activities on facilitating and providing opportunities for care providers; acting as an information resource and developing collaborative strategies for hospice and palliative care providers, organizations, institutions and individuals.

• Under her leadership, the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) has been recognized as a global organization in the field. Established strong relationships with other regional and national organizations, developed sustained relations with its board members, and successfully administered resources to fulfill the organization’s mission.
• Led and coordinated the effort of the development of the IAHPC List of Essential Medicines for Palliative Care, 2007.
• Led and coordinated with the World Wide Palliative Care Alliance, the Joint Declaration for the recognition of Palliative Care and Access to Pain Treatment as Human Rights. To date, more than 6,000 individuals and 400 organizations have signed the Declaration.
• Led the Latin American Association for Palliative Care (ALCP) for a period of 6 years, during which the organization grew, and gained capacity to operate and develop a long term strategy to ensure the sustainability of the organization.

Dr. Roberto Wenk actively promotes palliative care in primary care settings. Currently, he is developing a new and improved approach to education and management of palliative care. He has made numerous visits to the International Centers of Excellence in Palliative Medicine for many years as well as treating patients in their homes. Home care visits are part of his routine also known as.’ The Bus Rounds’. Activity takes place in a bus while visiting patients in their homes and facilities. The service also provides interdisciplinary, theoretical and practical activity for primary care physicians and nurses.

Dr. John Weru is a training consultant with the Kenya Hospices and Palliative Care Association (KEHPCA), Nairobi, Kenya and as such is charged with imparting practicing clinicians as well as undergraduate students with knowledge, skills and the art needed for proper practice of palliative care .As the Medical Director of the Thika Hospice, his role is to ensure that all clinical services are provided in a quality manner and that staff are kept up to date with current practices in palliative care. He is also responsible for the setting up and running of the palliative care services at the Cancer Care Kenya and Kibera Integrated Community Self-Help Programme – Kenya (KICOSHEP).

Dr. Van Den Eynden’s academic work focuses on teaching and research in palliative care. At the undergraduate level, he coordinates the module Palliative Medicine and is responsible for the implementation of palliative care within the other undergraduate modules. In the Master Nursing Care program, he teaches ‘Care Ethics.’ He chairs and coordinates the Interuniversity Palliative Medicine Postgraduate Course. Within the Department of Primary and Interdisciplinary Health Care and also in cooperation with the Department of Nursing Care, he is developing a strong line in palliative care research. He is project leader of the ‘Huisarts in Palliatieve Zorg’ Programma (HiPP), a Golden Standards Framework inspired, interactive ICT-based educational program, allowing general practitioners to ameliorate and to evaluate the quality of the palliative care they deliver. From 2009-2010, by order of the Flemisch Governement and of the Flemisch Organization of Palliative Care, Dr. Van Den Eynden lead a research group in developing a Palliative Care Pathway (ZPPZ). Recently he was awarded a grant from the governmental Belgian Institute for Disease and Invalidity Insurance to develop and research a strategy to implement this Palliative Care Pathway.

Dr M.R. Rajagopal feels strongly that the needless pain and suffering from life-limiting diseases in the developing world is scandalous, and works at identifying barriers and strategies to overcome them. He was one of the founders of the pioneering Pain and Palliative Care Society in Calicut in Kerala, India which made palliative care a popular movement in that state and the founder of Pallium India (www.palliumindia.org) which works towards improving access to palliative care in India.

Over ten years, it developed into the biggest Palliative Care Centre in the country incorporating a major “Institute of Palliative Medicine” (IPM). Today, it has more than 100 link centres in various parts of Kerala.

Professor Lukas Radbruch is the Chair of Palliative Medicine at the University of Bonn, in the Western part of Germany. He has been the first Chair of Palliative Medicine at the RWTH Aachen University in Aachen from 2003-2010. Professor Radbruch attended medical school in Bonn, Germany, specialized in anaesthesiology and completed his habilitation (the German equivalent of a PhD) in 2000 in Cologne. His main research interests include symptom assessment, opioid treatment, fatigue, cachexia and ethical issues in palliative care. Professor Radbruch is involved in European palliative care research collaboratives and coordinates the project Access To Opioid Medication in Europe, which is funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission.

Khanh Thanh Quach, MD is a graduate of the International Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program and the International Leadership Development Initiative at San Diego Hospice and the Institute for Palliative Medicine. Since 2008, he has been responsible for the development of the Palliative Care Unit at Ho Chi Minh City Cancer Hospital. He teaches Palliative Care training courses for medical students and lectures extensively on palliative care throughout Vietnam.
