Dr M.R. Rajagopal feels strongly that the needless pain and suffering from life-limiting diseases in the developing world is scandalous, and works at identifying barriers and strategies to overcome them. He was one of the founders of the pioneering Pain and Palliative Care Society in Calicut in Kerala, India which made palliative care a popular movement in that state and the founder of Pallium India (www.palliumindia.org) which works towards improving access to palliative care in India.

  • Worked with the WHO Collaborating Center at Madison-Wisconsin and with Government of India to improve opioid availability in India. The work has so far resulted in simplification of narcotic regulations in 13 states in India as well as in uninterrupted availability of oral morphine from the Government Opium and Alkaloid factories in India, 1996-current
  • One of the founders of Pain and Palliative Care Society (PPCS) in Medical College, Calicut, in 1993. In 1995, it was recognized as a model demonstration project by the World Health Organisation, known for its suitability to the socio-cultural needs of the country, for its novel training programs and for its roots in the community. Over ten years, it developed into the biggest Palliative Care Centre in the country incorporating a major “Institute of Palliative Medicine” (IPM). Today, it has more than 100 link centres in various parts of Kerala.

Professor Lukas Radbruch is the Chair of Palliative Medicine at the University of Bonn, in the Western part of Germany. He has been the first Chair of Palliative Medicine at the RWTH Aachen University in Aachen from 2003-2010. Professor Radbruch attended medical school in Bonn, Germany, specialized in anaesthesiology and completed his habilitation (the German equivalent of a PhD) in 2000 in Cologne. His main research interests include symptom assessment, opioid treatment, fatigue, cachexia and ethical issues in palliative care. Professor Radbruch is involved in European palliative care research collaboratives and coordinates the project Access To Opioid Medication in Europe, which is funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission.

Dr. Vadim Pogonet is an anesthesiologist-intensive care specialist in the Institute of Oncology, Republic of Moldova. With competence in palliative care and chronic pain, he is also involved in supporting the development of Palliative Care in his country. To increase awareness about palliative care, he develops documents that push forward cancer pain control and palliative care in Moldova. Recently, with the support of the OSF and the local Soros organization, he is promoting palliative care, as Mobile Multidisciplinary Team, in the Institute of Oncology, the only medical institution in Moldova dealing with cancer treatment.

Eileen helps to coordinate the International Programs, including the implementation, day-to-day operations, and future planning of our International Leadership Development Initiative (LDI), our International Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program and our International Visitors and Visiting Scholars Programs. As Faculty for LDI, she participates in the design and training of international doctors in leadership skills and coaches the LDI Leaders and Mentors in their development plans, empowering them to build palliative care capacity globally. In 2002, Dr. Folaju Oyebola started the first hospital based Palliative Care project in Nigeria by integrating pain and palliative care services into an existing Tertiary Health Care hospital. Subsequently in 2006, pain management, care and support for People Living with HIV/AIDS were added to the services. At present, the average number of patient cases managed by the Centre is 2,000.

The community outreach includes home based palliative care which offers grief and bereavement services at the patients home. In 2008, an Annual Clinical Exchange program was created to offer palliative care education and training to the hospital staff. The training is always extended to staff of sister hospitals that assist in the set-up of any new palliative care services. Recently Geriatric palliative care has been added to the list of services offered. The hospital project is in collaboration with an NGO named – Community Hospice and Palliative Care Centre Nigeria (CHPCC) and the vision is to extend the services to every community and rural areas across Nigeria.

As the Director for National Education, Strategy and Development, at Hospice “Casa Sperantei” Foundation, Dr Daniela Mosoiu has been part of the leadership who lead the way to over 11.000 cared for patients in four Romanian locations (of which 2 rural) and over 12.000 medical and non-medical staff being trained from multiple countries, from Romania, Moldova, Serbia, Ukraine, Russia, Bulgaria , Greece, Macedonia, Armenia, Kosovo to Albania, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, and Poland. In her role as the National Coordinator for the Romanian Palliative Care Subspecialty course, she is working with health authorities and legislators to foster development of palliative care services and integration in the national health care system.

Over the years Dr. Moore has served as a volunteer in East and South-Central Africa, liaising with international and regional non-governmental organizations to provide clinical and teaching services. Providing sabbatical relief for mission hospital staff, working with community agencies in health surveys and rehabilitation of HIV orphanages and schools, water, hygiene and sanitation projects as well as broad public health efforts with Doctors without Borders has given her a personal understanding of what it means to work in communities at risk. In addition to deep commitment to teaching and exquisite patient and family care, Shannon has been involved in bringing the language of humanity and spirit into the practice of Palliative Medicine.

Judi implements and supervises all grant-related management activities and provides management oversight and reporting on all Federal and private grants. Judi has a passion for ensuring that grant funding is properly managed and appropriately utilized. She completed a Grants Management Certification Program in 2007.
