Dr. Hanneke Brits is a consultant in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein South Africa. She is involved in the training of undergraduate and post graduate medical students as well as allied health students. This training involves both theory and practice regarding clinical conditions, teamwork, interdisciplinary training and palliative care principles. Her main interests are pediatrics and obstetrics. She leads the pediatric ward at National District Hospital where she renders clinical care to children and integrated palliative care in hospital care. She is the volunteer medical director of the Sunflower Children’s Hospice and does clinical care and training for the in-patient division: home care and day care.

Dr. Henry Ddungu is a Consultant, Hematology/Oncology at the Uganda Cancer Institute, Mulago Hospital an organization with a mission to provide state of the art cancer care and prevention by advancing knowledge, research and professional development. He has worked with Palliative Care Organizations in Uganda and Africa initially as a clinician providing palliative care services to terminally ill cancer and AIDS patients and later as an Advocacy Manager for Africa. He has been passionate about teaching and has taught palliative care in Uganda, Ghana, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho, Mozambique, Botswana, Nigeria, Rwanda and Sierra Leone. His focus is seeing that all those in need of palliative care, including opioids, can access them throughout Africa. His current research interest is in supportive care interventions that would help improve cancer patients’ quality of life.

Dr. Dudgeon is the Director of the Palliative Care Medicine Program at Queen’s University. The Program provides clinical care in the community, and consultation and primary care in Kingston General Hospital and St Mary’s of the Lake and outpatient clinics in the Cancer Center of Southeastern Ontario. Queen’s University provides education to undergraduate medical students, postgraduate students and continuing medical education for practicing physicians and nurses. Dr. Dudgeon’s research interests include the etiology and management of patients with dyspnea and health services research.

Dr. Cameron’s main professional interests are mentoring and medical education. He is a medical educational consultant to the Foundation for Professional Development. He is involved in palliative care in a number of ways. He teaches palliative care to medical students and does voluntary work at the local hospice. One of the interesting projects that he is involved in at the moment is in geriatric palliative care. He is assisting his wife in developing an educational and mentoring project for improving End–of-Life care in residential homes for the elderly. He is particularly interested in the appropriate and safe use of medication and in improving decision making with regards to the admission to hospital of dying elderly residents.

Dr. Csikos established the Pecs-Baranya Hospice Foundation in 2004. As Medical Director she provides patient care and palliative care consults for primary care physicians. She is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Family Medicine, University of Pecs Medical School, teaching medical, nursing and pharmacy students, residents and continuing medical education courses. As part of her role, Agnes teaches symptom management and pain control, psychosocial and spiritual aspects of care, and puts emphasis on education of the “hospice team” approach. She is committed to introduce palliative care education as an obligatory part of the medical and nursing training programs.

Dr. Bushnaq is the Director of the Jordan Palliative Care Clinic and Bushnaq Training & Developing Center. While at the King Hussein Cancer Center he focused on building their palliative care consultation program. He then decided to open his own private clinic in September of 2010. He is Chairman of the Jordan Palliative Care Society and an active member of Jordan Pain Society where he is able to build palliative care on not just a local level but country wide. Dr. Bushnaq is a temporary adviser on palliative care for EMRO-WHO. He has contributed to many palliative care studies in both Arabic and English. He has become a leader in training nationally and internationally for palliative care, pain management, self-care and burn out.

Dr. Thuy Bui Thi Bich is the Head of Infectious Diseases Department at Haiphong Medical University, Haiphong City, Vietnam. On May 15, 2010, she successfully launched the e-learning in Palliative Care, which she had developed, at Hai Phong Medical University. She provides palliative care for HIV/AIDS patients who come in to the Department of Infectious Disease at Vietnamese – Czech General Hospital and on July 6, 2011, she held the opening ceremony at Vietnamese – Czech General Hospital of the Palliative Care Unit for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH).
