We are delighted to announce the second Cohort of The International Palliative Care Leadership Development Initiative (LDI). Cohort 2 will run for two years from January 2012 to December 2013. The LDI is for palliative care physicians who wish to develop critical leadership knowledge, skills and behaviors that will help them to advance palliative care capacity locally, nationally and internationally. The ultimate goal of the LDI is to increase world-wide access to excellent palliative care for those who need it.

Through three (3) residential courses (2 weeks in February 2012; 1 week in November 2012 and 1 week in November 2013), inter-session leadership activities and expert guidance from global palliative care and other leaders, participants will develop increasing confidence and have powerful leadership experiences. Conceptual and practical tools and instruments will be used to enhance self-awareness and leadership skill building.

Six focus areas are built into the LDI curriculum:

  • Core leadership skills
  • Presentation, facilitation and mentorship skills
  • Strategic planning and implementation skills
  • Organizational leadership skills (local, national, international)
  • Academic leadership and research skills
  • Community organizing, communication campaign strategies, policy craft

Eligibility Criteria: To be considered for the LDI, eligible applicants must be:

  1. Physicians with a minimum of 5 years of practice in palliative care
  2. Living and working in a low or middle income country (as defined by the World Bank, see
  3. Capable of reading and speaking conversational and medical English fluently
  4. Currently working in a clinical, educational, research or advocacy activity with a primary focus on palliative care
  5. Committed to continuing to work in palliative care throughout the two years of the LDI experience, and afterwards
  6. Able to demonstrate leadership activities beyond the delivery of palliative care to patients and families
  7. Able to demonstrate the potential to increase palliative care capacity
  8. Self-motivated with the desire to lead – locally, nationally and/or internationally

Applicants must:

  1. Submit a completed application with all supporting documents before 24:00 hours on April 30, 2011 in San Diego (Pacific Time = GMT – 8). There will not be any exceptions. Upload your completed application into our Survey Monkey tool at
  2. Be available to participate in a one-hour phone interview, if requested
  3. Provide 3 letters of support from colleagues and leadership of the organization you work for
  4. Provide an initial strategic plan for one palliative care capacity-building activity to work on during the two years of the LDI (we recommend you work with one or more colleagues who can mentor you to submit the best possible application)
  5. Reserve the dates for the residential courses in your calendar now, including at least 3 days before the course to fly and adjust to the jet lag in San Diego:
    • February 2 to February 19, 2012 (2 weeks)
    • November 01 to 11, 2012 (1 week)
    • November 07 to 17, 2013 (1 week)
  6. Agree to participate in all days of the residential courses.
  7. Agree to follow the LDI Participant Guidelines and complete all evaluations, and narrative and financial reports on time… Read the Participant Guidelines…(PDF 670 KB)
  8. Submit a signed letter of support from your supervisor(s) confirming that you will be able to participate in all of the LDI activities, including have time to complete the leadership skill building and palliative care capacity building activities that you include in the individual development plan (IDP) that you will develop during the first residential course in San Diego.
  9. Agree to purchase health and travel insurance to cover them for all of the days they will be in the USA (we recommend purchasing a plan that will cover all travel throughout the two years of LDI – you will be able to use your LDI stipend to purchase this insurance)

Review Process: After May 01, 2011, all completed applications will be reviewed by the LDI leadership Team and a number of internationally recognized palliative care leaders. The decision of the LDI Leadership Team is final. We regret that we do not have the resources to provide feedback to applicants who are not successful.
